This exhibition is an attempt to honor President Xi Jinping’s instructions on literary and art creation, tell China’s stories with plastic arts, and spread traditional Chinese culture. All the exhibits are the fruits of the Chinese Civilization and History Themed Fine Arts Creation Project which was jointly launched by China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Culture. After the project concluded this year, all the artworks that had passed the acceptance inspection became part of the NMC collection.

The 26 sculptures on display are about specific themes of Chinese civilization and history. Faithful to the history and original in design, these sculptures have successfully represented the glorious past of Chinese civilization and fully demonstrated the cultural values and the contemporary spirit of the Chinese nation. Among them there are not only sculptures of historical figures, but also group sculptures and relief works, featuring either a group of figures or different scenarios, as well as decorative wall sculptures, enriching the forms and styles of artistic representation of historical figures and events.

Zhang Xiangming: The Inner Vividity Hidden in The Hyperrealism

Among the artists based in China born from the 1950s to the 1970s, many of them are famous for the female portraits works in realistic style. The artist Zhang Xiangming, who is born in Shandong Province and Graduated from Shandong Normal University art department in 2003, defines his women portraits as a realist style, but actually it is shown quite clearly on the paintings the artist’s observation and refining of the inner world of these figures. In these faces and eyes, the characteristically vivid beauty of Chinese girls escapes from the classic close-up portrayals of hyperrealism which seems no easy to catch, but is presented by him on canvas with great clarity.

The series called Beijing Girls is the artist’s experiment and exploration for the beauty of oriental women. Among them some early works are portrayed with headdresses and make-ups originated from Chinese opera, which have also been added to the later works as “unreal details”, tending to display the hazy implicit nature via featured oriental elements.

Artbaiguan: We noticed that some of your works have typical marks of Hyperrealism, is this the main direction and technics of your career?

Zhang Xiangming: Yes, my works tend to be realist, like the series Basketball created in 2014, but I had to suspend it after completing the 7th piece because of some limitation unexpected.

Artbaiguan: Beijing Girls should be one of your most acclaimed series in China as well as in other countries, Could you talk with us about your intention for it?

Zhang Xiangming: Depicting female portraits is always my passion. I have never tried to paint portraits like these before 2006, but in my works I found myself partial to depict the face expression, so I gradually removed the body and focused on the closed-up faces. I named them Beijing Girls because my studio is in Beijing and all the painting models are based here.

创作《北京女孩》系列的初衷还是由于我个人的兴趣点在这里吧,我2006年之前没有画过大头女孩,后来在创作中比较偏爱对人物神态的表现,所以我在画面构图上逐渐把身体部分去了把人物面孔放大了。《北京女孩》这个名字当时也没有考虑太多,当时工作室在北京模特也都是北京的就定了个《北京女孩》作为我这一系列的名称。

Artbaiguan: It is regarded as a portrait work from the first sight, but we can find some special artistic effects in it. What is your intention for them?

Zhang Xiangming: Zhang Xiangming: Each one of my work is originated from the photo of a real person, but my aim is not just to depicting them. I reconstruct and integrate the facial features, trying to present in my paintings the inner feelings of the oriental women that I perceive, and construct my interpretation of the beauty.

Artbaiguan: We found that some of your portraits are based on images of public figures and stars, aren’t they?

Zhang Xiangming: Yes, I also choose images of celebrities as references.

Artbaiguan: Which part of your work do you think is the most painstaking one that takes you most of the time and energy?

Zhang Xiangming: For me the most challenging part is not dealing with technical details, but to be able to grasp the people’s emotions and feelings in that very moment, it is the crucial point of the whole work but also most difficult to complete.

Artbaiguan: The dimensions of this series are all huge, is it an advantage o disadvantage for your depiction?

Zhang Xiangming: It is an advantage, for sure. Because usually a painting in large size leaves to the viewers a strong visual impact and deep impression, making it more than just a painting.

Artbaiguan: What do you want the viewers see when they look at your paintings?

Zhang Xiangming: I hope they can be touched by every figure’s inner spiritual nature hidden in the eyes and under the face, not just be surprised by my painting techniques.

The exhibition The Ming Dynasty of Jade Ware – Treasure of the Era of Zheng He will present 121 sets/pieces of selected collections from Hubei Provincial Museum. The magnificente gold, silver and jade wares reflect the luxury life style of the seigniors in the Ming dynasty,  revealing the politic visions and the cultural conventions of ancient China and the great feat of the Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat, fleet admiral, Zheng He, who commanded seven expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, Western Asia, and East Africa from 1405 to 1433, accelerating the cultural and economic exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

The Exhibition includes four series of works:
Motherland is started from 1999 and it took the artist Cai Zhisong 16 years’ time to complete. This series is composed by 3 parts, namely Custom to Motherland, Refinement to Motherland and Ode to Motherland, in which the sculpting techniques from different eras of history are mixed together. By creating the series of works using concrete shapes and modern materials, the artist expressed his concern toward the history and human beings.
Rose was completed from 2008 to 2013, which are installations that represent the artist’s concept of love.
Cloud is started from 2011. The first group of this series were created for the 54th Biennale of Venice. This series shows the artist’s concept of life.
Started from 2016, the Inhabiting focuses on the relation between human beings and the nature and the connotation in the deep of the life.

The exhibition Cai Jin: Arcadia to be opened on March 10th 2018 will be the second exhibition of the artist in Chamber Gallery.Widely acclaimed as one of the most distinctive painters of her generation, Cai Jin first attracted critical attention in the early 1990s with her paintings of merienjiao (translated as “Banana Plant”). Inspired by a dying plant that she saw in her native Anhui province in 1990, she has painted about 400 variations on this theme between 1991 and the present day, not only in oil on canvas but also on other materials and objects, including mattresses, bathtubs, shoes, and bicycle saddles.

Arcadia differs in all respects from this festive interlude in which Cai Jin celebrated the expansiveness of her vision in a series of canvases both large and small. It is no longer merely the growth and decay of the Meirenjiao that provides the subject matter of her painting; she has now begun to incorporate imagery representing the microscopic bacteria that are involved in both processes of the Banana plant’s biological transformation. It is not easy to say whether the bacteria are harmful or beneficial, and it is this ambiguity that is just as likely to cause a frisson of pleasure as it is of fear. Turning away from rectangular canvases, she ordered 120 bicycle saddles and 300 high-heel shoes on which to paint, not the first time she has used them but certainly never in such quantity. Responding to the layout of the gallery, she has orchestrated a dialog between shoes and saddles in the East Gallery, saddles climbing the wall in a random pattern and shoes scattered across the floor as if all their wearers have evaporated into thin air.

Roaming Free in Magnificente Infinity Sculptures of Wu Ching

Wu Ching was born into a simple farming family of Chiayi, Taiwan in 1956. The only word to describe his youth is “wild.” Farming village life was pretty simple, giving him a most unfettered childhood and a far more genuine experience of life than most. He first encountered carving at age 17 and developed his rudimentary technique from carving wood furniture.

Wu Ching is a sculptor that embeds his observation and reflection of the nature in his sculpture. Starting from the incision in wood, the artist has created his unique sculpture series in gold, which is extremely different from the traditional Chinese sculpture works made by wood, stone, jade, bamboo, bones and ivory.

The exhibition presents 30 pieces of selected sculpture works in gold and wood divided in four themes, namely wood sculptures, gold sculptures, bionomics and abstractism, in which the superb techniques of the artist and the breathtaking beauty of the works will bring not only a feast to the eye but also a deep interpretation of the aesthetic and philosophic senses.

Van Art Space is about to declare that “Fifty Moons”-a new year group exhibition will be presented on January 19,2018, at that time, the great works of artists Shaohan Cui, Jingjie Huang, Wenzhang Qi, Xinxun Ying, Aijun Yu, Ming Zhou will be exhibited. The material contains paper, oil painting, fibre ,video and photography , they are trying to explore the relevant logicality and relevance between drawing and painting, realism and abstraction as well as material and material, the visual diversity and the rich senses in contemporary art are reflected, therefore, how they discuss art from different ways is also presented. “Fifty Moons”is a photograph work of Shaohan Cui, by the theme, the aim is to deliver much possibilities like limitlessness, poetry and warmth from creativity. Maybe their creation would drive and remind us of some kind of discomfort that we feel inside, but self-perception would be propelled by such discomfort, maybe this is the most important origin of “excarnation”. At the beginning of the new year, Van Art Space hopes to sort out and summarize the art direction it has been upholding by hosting such a exhibition. From these representative artists, to find the reason why Van Art Space and the artists continue to improve, strive and help mutually, in this way, the present and future of the art ecology can be reflected.
